A few practical answers

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

No, you can self-refer for physiotherapy services.

Do I need an ACC claim number to book an appointment?

No, if there has been a specific accident or cause of injury then you can lodge an ACC claim with your physiotherapist at your first appointment. If there has not been an accident or specific event that caused your pain this would then be a private appointment.

What is the difference between a simple and complex assessment?

A simple or new injury assessment focuses on a recent issue—such as a sprain, strain, or acute pain—where the cause is usually clear. The assessment is targeted, with a physical examination and a straightforward treatment plan to support healing and return to activity.

A complex or chronic pain assessment is more in-depth. It's designed for pain that has been present for longer or doesn't follow a typical recovery pattern. Alongside physical factors, we explore how the nervous system, lifestyle, stress, sleep, and past experiences may be influencing your pain. This allows us to create a personalised, holistic plan that builds understanding, restores confidence in movement, and supports long-term recovery.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring any relevant medical information, such as referral letters, scan or imaging reports, and a list of current medications. Wear comfortable clothing that allows us to easily assess the area of concern (for example, shorts for a knee injury or a singlet for a shoulder issue).

If your injury is covered by ACC, it's helpful to bring your claim number if you have it. You may also like to bring any questions or goals you have—this helps us tailor your assessment and treatment to what matters most to you.
